Congratulations to Okanogan Senior Grant Gillespie and Omak Senior Veronica Estrella Delgado Lopez, these two exceptional students are the winners of the 2022 Okanogan-Omak Rotary Baccalaureate Scholarship.
Okanogan's Scholarship winner is Grant Gillespie. Grant plans to attend Stanford University to pursue a degree in Economics with a career goal of Financial Analyst.
Grant's view of Community Service is impressive: "When I do a service for my community, I feel good about myself. I think that I have evolved from feeling like service projects were just something to do into wanting to do the service projects so that I can help others and feelgood about myself. I love the warm feeling inside that I get from helping my community. I have somewhat of a symbiotic relationship with community service. I help the community and that in turn helps me feel good."
Omak's Scholarship winner is Veronica Estrella Delgado Lopez. Veronica plans to attend the University of Washington to pursue a degree in Kinesiology with a career of Physical Therapist.
Veronica's view of Community Service truly mirrors the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self": "I have a very busy schedule with work, school, sports and helping my parents with the stores but I still manage to help others too. During the COVID-19 times I tutored some kids who needed help in school while also being my own teacher at home. COVID-I9 made me a more mature person and had me take on more responsibilities since we all had restrictions, I decided to get a job at Walmart while still having to help my parents with the store, taking online school and tutoring kids struggling with school. Tutoring younger kids I enjoyed because when I was little and to this day I struggle with asking people for help when I need help. I didn't want the kids to try doing it all on there especially since they had not been in the states for very long. Spanish being my first language, I have always helped people with English barriers since a very young age, interpreting for them and helping them understand the English language, even my parents are not fluent in English so I had to learn to translate for them as well. I deserve this scholarship because I am a hardworking, responsible, and compassionate person."
